Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coaching History

From Lenny Wilkens to John Beilein

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a rich history of head coaches, from Lenny Wilkens to John Beilein. Wilkens, a Hall of Famer, coached the Cavaliers from 1986 to 1993 and led them to the NBA Finals in 1992. Mike Brown, another two-time head coach, coached the Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010 and led them to the NBA Finals in 2007.

John Beilein, who was hired in 2019, was the latest head coach of the Cavaliers. Beilein, a former college basketball coach, had a successful career at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to two Final Fours. However, he struggled to find success in the NBA, and the Cavaliers fired him in February 2020.

JB Bickerstaff Promoted to Head Coach

Following Beilein's departure, JB Bickerstaff was promoted to head coach on a full-time basis. Bickerstaff, who had been an assistant coach with the Cavaliers since 2018, had previously served as the team's interim head coach after Beilein was fired.

Bickerstaff has a long history of coaching in the NBA, having served as an assistant coach for several teams. He is known for his strong defensive acumen and his ability to develop young players.
